Stories from around the Kitchen table
When we first become parents we undertake our allocated roles and responsibilities without a manual to fully prepare us for the roller coaster ride that begins the day our children are born. Our emotions are like a cocktail drink, with great tears of joy and happiness mixed with confusion, trepidation, exhaustion and excitement. From day one begins our assigned roles of either mother or father stirred with being an educator, friend, confidante, leader, team member and teacher. We somehow have to master each role on a very steep learning curve to make it fun for both ourselves and our children. Thus begins our learning journey!
One of our important responsibility is to not only stay in front of our children as they grow it is also about keeping pace with them. We are sure that you have noticed over the last two decades you have seen and experienced the role of parenting has almost turned on its head.
For the first time in any generation have you noticed that it is our children who are the teachers? Imagine what it must be like for our parents or their grandparents? It is interesting to consider this from two perspectives. Firstly in terms of technology and secondly in relation to the education our children are receiving at school and from their peers.
The technological advances occurring at such a rapid pace that unless we as a parent are prepared to sit beside our children 24/7 we cannot possibly know or understand their world and the terminology that operates within it.
